Overview
Dr. Weimer is a Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Nutrition & Food Sciences at Utah State University. He directs the Center for Integrated BioSystems (CIB) and the Center for Microbe Detection & Physiology (CMDP) at Utah State University. He is a recognized expert in microbiology and microbial physiology using genomics and metabolomics. He is specifically focused on microbial genomics, physiology, and infectious agents. Dr. Weimer conducts research in host/microbe interactions, isolation of novel bioactive natural products, and infectious disease agents. As director he is focused on using this expertise to lead the CIB in research, core services, and biotechnology training. He also lends technical support to academia and industry, using biotechnology, genomics and, metabolomics solutions.
Prior to joining USU, he obtained degrees from University of Arizona (B.S., Honors) and Utah State University (Ph.D.) in microbiology. He trained at the University of Melbourne (Australia) as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics and physiology. Dr. Weimer has also held managerial posts in the food industry related to food and flavor systems. He has worked in microbiology for over 15 years and has conducted research for the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, the Air Force, USDA, DMI, and various industrial affiliates in the agricultural sector.
Dr. Weimer has written over 65 peer-reviewed publications, given over 300 presentations, mentored more than 20 advanced students and research fellows, managed over $15 million in research funding, and holds six patents and four trademarks. Currently, he oversees research projects in the CIB and is dedicated to furthering the mission of biotechnology to meet the needs and expectations of society.
