                  Waldron Fund Scholarship
                   Request for Applications

E.L. and Inez Waldron Endowment FundThe E.L. and Inez Waldron Endowment Fund for the USU Center for Integrated BioSystems was established as a student scholarship fund to encourage and assist students in USU departments that support the Center. The intent of these funds is to help meet the educational needs of graduate students involved in systems biology research. The funds, which are not to exceed $500/year per student, will be awarded to graduate students who demonstrate they meet the following criterion and demonstrate that the proposed activity will benefit the student and systems biology research at Utah State University.

Scholarship Criteria

The Waldron Fund specifies that students must meet at least one of the following criteria to be eligible for funding. Students must submit unofficial transcripts as one element of documenting their scholarship. A statement within the one page abstract along with supporting statements from the student’s mentor can help demonstrate if at least one of these criteria is met. These criteria are:

  • Top scholars

  • Students who show unusual promise

  • Scholars in special financial need

Selection Criteria

The Waldron Scholarship is restricted to students who:

  • Actively pursue research in systems biology

  • Have not received a CIB-R Student Grant

  • Will use the funds in systems biology programs or activities
Students must provide requested information on the Waldron Application Form and in their one page abstracts.

Appropriate Activities Criteria

Students must describe their proposed activity in a single page abstract. Examples of fundable activities are:

  • Aid for students to attend workshops or similar short-term educational
    opportunities

  • Travel funds to conferences or meetings (preference given to students
    presenting oral/lecture presentations)

  • For short-term visits to laboratories at other universities and institutions
for the purpose of gaining specific skills and techniques needed in the
    student’s research

Students giving lecture/oral presentations in the areas of metabolomics, genomics or proteomics will be given preference in awards.

The use of the Waldron Fund will be at the discretion of the Director of the Center for Integrated BioSystems. The Waldron Scholarship Committee will review all applications and make selections.

Application packets must include:

  1. A Waldron Application Form. Forms must be complete upon submittal. No handwritten or incomplete applications will be considered.

  2. A one-page abstract describing the student's grant or project and its benefit to systems biology initiatives at Utah State University. Please refer to the above criterion to assist in preparing the abstract. Activities or presentations directly related to metabolomics, genomics and proteomics will be given preference.

  3. An unofficial copy of the student's transcripts.

  4. A letter of support from the student's advisor/mentor should be forwarded directly to the CIB. A student's application file will not be considered complete without this letter. Students are responsible to see that their advisor/mentor sends the letter.
