Apple Workgroup Cluster for Bioinformatics (8 node)

Summary:

The CIB's Apple Workgroup Cluster provides campus researchers with the computing horsepower necessary to run large datasets using the latest bioinformatics analysis tools. These tools are available via a web interface, making them accessible anywhere from the lab to the office to the home computer.

Overview:

The cluster consists of 8 Apple XServe G5 nodes, each with dual 2 GHz PowerPC 970FX processors and 2 GB RAM per node. The PowerPC 970FX is a 64-bit processor which is capable of powering next-generation 64-bit applications while seamlessly running 32-bit code as well.

The cluster is driven by Mac OS X Panther Server, which with its UNIX underpinnings makes it an ideal environment in which to run today's bioinformatics applications. Many UNIX-based open source applications have already been ported to Mac OS X, and many that have not may be ported easily.

Included on the cluster are 170+ bioinformatics applications supplied by BioTeam, and other command-line applications may be easily integrated and given a web interface for easy access. If you have a particular request, please contact the CIB's Bioinfomatics Group.

Open-access computers:

The CIB currently provides four open-access computers for use in bioinformatics. The computers are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and there are sign-up sheets available for each computer. A listing of primary software available on these machines can be found here.
